Life with braces: What to expect

Here at BeClear Orthodontics, we want adjusting to your new braces to be as comfortable of a process as possible.

When you have braces, your oral hygiene becomes even more important. To make sure your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout your entire orthodontic treatment, follow our tips below.

Oral health and brushing with braces

Brushing your teeth with your fixed braces isn’t anything to be intimidated about. Just remember that, since your gums may be a little harder to reach with braces, it’s important to pay special attention to maintaining a healthy brushing routine.

Here’s a quick step-by-step that takes less than 10 minutes:

  • Brush for 3-5 minutes, making sure to get between each tooth and bracket
  • Brush at least twice a day in the morning and at night. If you can, brush after each meal
  • If you can’t brush after each meal, rinse out your mouth with water
  • Use fluoride toothpaste when you brush
  • Floss at least once a day

Life with braces

To keep your mouth healthy while you have braces, it’s a good idea to avoid smoking, biting your nails, or chewing on pens, etc. We also recommend that you continue seeing your dentist regularly throughout your treatment. While your orthodontist focuses on straightening your teeth and correcting alignment, your dentist will focus on making sure your teeth and gums remain clean and healthy.

Of course, with Invisalign®, none of this special cleaning and care is necessary. Just remove the aligners, and keep up your good oral hygiene as normal!

Be aware of gum disease

If your gums become sore, swollen, bleed or look infected, it could be a result of a bigger problem, like gingivitis. Talk to your orthodontist or your general dentist to ensure that your gums stay healthy and prevent any future damage.

Tips for eating with braces

When you have fixed braces, there are some foods you’ll need to be careful with, and some that are best avoided.

Try to avoid:

  • Hard or crunchy foods like hard candies and nuts
  • Chewy foods like chewing gum, doughy bread
  • Sticky food like toffees, marshmallow
  • Foods you bite into, like whole apples, corn on the cob

You should be careful with sugary food and drinks, as this can cause the buildup of plaque, which can cause discolouration of the teeth and, in some cases an increased chance of gum disease.

If something you eat hurts your teeth or damages your braces, it’s important to see your orthodontist as quickly as possible. We allocate appointments everyday for orthodontic emergencies - so phone the practice we’ll see you as soon as possible. We will also do our best to help manage any symptoms over the phone if you are on holidays or unable to get into the clinic. We have plenty of tricks up our sleeve.

Of course, with Invisalign®, not much of a lifestyle change is necessary. Just remove the aligners when eating, and rinse with your mouth with water before putting them back in

Playing sports and instruments with braces

Wearing braces doesn’t mean breaking up with your favorite hobbies. You can still practice any wind instrument or play whatever sport your heart desires - even after having your braces fitted. You’ll just need to be patient as you adjust.

It shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks to get used to the new embouchure (positioning of the lips and mouth).

For our athletes - whether you are the high school star or a weekend recreationalist - we recommend getting fitted for a custom mouthguard that can protect your teeth and your braces from impact, friction and other damage.

Of course, with Invisalign, music and sport can go on unhindered.

Invisalign®: The flexible solution for busy lives

If you still aren’t sure about how fixed braces will work with your life, you can speak to Dr. Laura about removable options, like Invisalign® and Invisalign® First clear aligners.

Invisalign® clear aligners are removable, so you can take them out while you eat, brush your teeth, play your instrument or practice sports. Afterwards, you can clean the aligners and put them back in to continue encouraging movement toward your best smile!
